The Creative World of Izumi Hooper

The Creative World of Izumi Hooper

For artist and designer Izumi Hooper, inspiration can be found almost anywhere — from old signs and vintage textiles to conversations, music and travel. Having collaborated on prints across recent Kinga Csilla collections, we caught up with Izumi to chat about her creative journey, artistic process and the ideas that continue to shape her work.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your creative background?
I was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan—a small island deeply rooted in beach culture. I moved to Tokyo in my late teens to study design and relocated to Australia about 20 years ago. Since then I’ve lived between Japan and Australia, working across various creative fields including graphic design, illustration, murals, branding and art projects.

How would you describe your artistic style in your own words?
Honestly, I’m a bit of a chameleon. My style evolves depending on my mood, the specific project, or the client. I enjoy exploring a wide range of visual styles rather than being confined to just one.

What inspired the prints you created for the Oliveaqua collection?
The prints were inspired by relaxed coastal energy, nature, travel memories, and a sense of freedom. I wanted them to feel playful, organic and easy to wear.

Can you walk us through your process when creating these designs?
My process usually starts with rough sketches and visual references, but for this project, I began with hand-drawn calligraphy. I wanted the designs to have a raw, organic energy from the very start. From there, I intuitively experimented with composition, shapes, and colors. I always strive to maintain a handmade feel, even when working digitally.

Were there any particular references (art, culture, nature, music, etc.) that influenced this work?
I’m influenced by everything: people, objects, music, and travel...Even the clothes I’m wearing can influence my creative flow. I also have a deep love for vintage graphics, Japanese culture, old textiles, and retro beach culture.

What drew you to working with Kinga Csilla?
I’ve always admired the relaxed, artistic aesthetic of Kinga Csilla. The brand feels expressive and human, which deeply resonates with my own creative approach.

Where do you usually find inspiration day-to-day?
Inspiration is everywhere: walking around, books, conversations, or even random textures and old signs. Many of my best ideas surface unexpectedly while I’m simply doodling without a specific goal in mind.

What are you currently working on or excited about next?
Right now, I’m excited about exploring more large-scale mural projects, textile work, and collaborations that merge art and design within physical spaces.

A special thank you to Izumi Hooper for sharing her creative world with us.
